Flower Power up to a Great Start at Plaza Las Americas

Judging from attendance on opening day, the Flower Power event at the Plaza Las Americas shopping mall in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is on its way to becoming the première Volkswagen and Porsche auto show on the Island. Even before the formal opening ceremonies had begun, the house was packed with VW and Porsche followers, who joined by the normal mall traffic packed the mall's central atrium.

Opening ceremony was headed by event coordinator Luis Mariano Muñoz, who welcomed attendees and introduced the mall representatives, Franklin Domenech (General Manager) and Ms. Sarah H. de Colomer (Director of Fairs and Exhibitions). After the protocol section of the ceremony, the Mall recognized the event honoree, Mr. Diego Febles, a local race car driver and mechanic, whose list of victories range from local to national events and even a first place in class at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans. Febles, Cuban born and San Juan resident for over forty years, is loved and respected by his peers and has been an example to several racing generations of drivers.

Flower Power at Las Americas gathers the very best Volkswagen and Porsche vehicles, all set in the elegant and busy corridors of the mall, complemented by an array of orchids and bonsai plants. This event attests to the fact that Plaza Las Americas has established itself as the premiere site for specialty, elegant automotive and automotive related shows.

Present at the event was Dr. Norman Gonzalez Chacon, Dr. Norman, head of the Volkswagen Museum of Puerto Rico, who presented to rare vehicles at the event. A great looking pair of black vehicles was composed of a 1947 KdF Beetle with a long and certified history of participating in events during WW2, and a 2004 "Fiftieth Anniversary Edition" of Mexico completed the duo. The Volkswagen Museum presented their booth with information and a video of the museum facilities.

Event Coordinator, Muñoz, has scheduled talks and seminars every afternoon beginning at 6:00pm, at which themes such as: VW Early Years, the Military Beetle, VW and Ferdinand Porsche, the history of the 911 Porsche and more.

Saturday the 24th. of April will be a special night at Plaza Las Americas, when a special homage is planned for Diego Febles in which Dean Kirsten, Technical Editor for Hot VW's Magazine will be attending as will the Schley brothers, who were responsible for the construction of Febles legendary "El Guineo" (The Banana), who began life in the United States as the "Lightning Bug", under EMPI sponsorship.
